Markus Ahrens, CPA, CGMA
Accounting Professor; Accounting & Legal Studies Department Chair
St. Louis Community College–Meramec
This award honors the contributions of accounting professors who demonstrate a dedication to lifelong learning, involvement in curriculum development, research and publication, contributions to the CPA profession, and commitment to the effective development of incoming professionals.
As Markus Ahrens’ colleagues say, “it’s hard to know where to begin when summarizing his contributions.” He spends countless hours outside the classroom working to improve the broader profession, though always putting his students first.
With a passion for service learning, Markus spent many years as a site coordinator for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. He co-founded TeachingandLearningToolbox.com, a free website that provides teaching resources “to raise the learning bar.” His primary research interests are experiential learning and student engagement utilizing technology.
Markus doesn’t just talk about his cutting-edge ideas; he implements them in the classroom and shares his successes. He has given more than 100 academic presentations, mostly related to student engagement techniques, all while maintaining a full teaching schedule. He is highly praised by students, who seek out his courses.
Markus chairs MOCPA’s Educational Foundation Board, serves on MOCPA’s Board of Directors, and is a past trustee for the AICPA Foundation Board. He has also served in leadership positions with the American Accounting Association and its Two-Year Section, the Conference on Teaching and Learning in Accounting, the AICPA Pre-Certification Education Executive Committee and the Missouri Association of Accounting Educators. He has received numerous national awards for his teaching and classroom innovation.
