How AMT Confuses Taxpayers

A new Treasury Department report says about 226,000 federal income-tax returns filed in 2006 either failed to include the AMT when it apparently should have been or contained "discrepancies" in calculating the amount of the tax.

>  Has The IRS Lost Its Appetite For Collecting Payroll Tax?

Evidence suggests that many businesses are no longer taking their obligation to pay and remit payroll tax seriously. According to recent GAO report, as of last September 30, 1.6 million businesses owe the IRS in excess of $58 billion in payroll taxes, interest, and penalties. That is the amount accumulated over a period of ten years. Taxes that have been owed for longer than ten years may have been permanently lost, due to a statute of limitations.

>  More Fraud Reported Through Tips Than Audits

Despite increased focus on anti-fraud controls in the wake of Sarbanes-Oxley and mandated consideration of fraud in financial audits due to SAS 99, new data shows that occupational frauds are much more likely to be detected by a tip than by audits, controls or any other means, according to a new report.

Technology Tip of the Week

Provided by the MSCPA Information Technology Committee

Excel Formulas That Read Your Mind
Q
: Help! I seem to have forgotten something very, very simple. I have a spreadsheet with a kind of running total in each row—a formula that uses data from the row itself and from the row above it. If I delete any of the rows, the formula result becomes #REF! for that row and all rows below it. Originally the formula in row 19 was ,i>=IF(D19+E19>0, G18+D19E19," "). After deleting row 19, it becomes =IF(D19+E19>0,#REF!+D19-E19," "). Why did only part of the formula adjust?
