>  Spouse Remains Chief Career Advisor for Many, Survey Shows

Those considering a job change seek many sources of guidance, but the opinion they value most often comes from the person closest to them. Nearly half (46 percent) of executives polled said they turn first to spouses or significant others for advice when evaluating a potential job change, up from 42 percent in 2002. The survey also shows mentors carry greater clout than five years ago: 41 percent respondents said they would consult their mentors first, compared to 28 percent in 2002.

>  To Get Ahead in Your Field, Consider Stepping Backward

When it comes to advancing a career, sometimes the best way to take a step forward is to take a step back.  For most people, a promotion is the cure for a stagnating career. They've accomplished and learned all they can at one job, so they aim for the next one up the ladder, hoping it will bring them bigger personal and financial rewards.  But a few pursue a much riskier strategy. Instead of trying to move up, they take a lower-level job that gives them valuable new skills and experience.

>  Number Crunching Alone Insufficient for Today's Financial Professionals, Suggests Survey

Accounting is a technical field, but job candidates who also possess strong soft skills now have an edge over those who stick strictly to the numbers, a recent survey suggests. More than half (53 percent) of chief financial officers (CFOs) said they would hire someone with fewer technical skills if the candidate had particularly strong soft skills, such as communication and interpersonal abilities.

What do you like most about
your job?

The people.  From my clients to my co-workers, I truly enjoy the people I work with.  In college, I never thought I would find a career where I was a perfectly fitting piece in a large puzzle, where every piece represents a different co-worker or client.  I did.  My work environment is very conducive to learning and offers the challenges I desire.  There are people at all levels of my firm that are experts in different areas who are willing to offer advice when I need it.  I can comfortably ask them questions and engage them in great discussions.  The public accounting industry is a wonderful place to meet and to work with intriguing people from all walks of life.

What advice would you give the newest young professionals?

I recommend that young professionals get their 150 hours and take the CPA examine early in their careers.  In my experience, it is better to get the 150 hours before starting your career, but if not, finish them as quickly as possible.  It is advantageous to get the CPA exam out of the way early, so you can focus on your career growth.  Lastly, I would advise that the newest young professionals do not rule out mid-size CPA firms.  They are big enough to offer you “big four” experience and opportunities to quickly advance, and they are small enough to provide you with the feeling of being a member of a large family.
