David Smith, CPA, MBA

Employer:  Edward W. Smith,
                    CPA

Location:  St. Louis

Member since:  March 2007

What do you like most about
      your job?

I truly enjoy the variety of my
work. As a CPA in a small public accounting practice, I work with different issues all year long.
The spring, of course, is tax time.
During the summer and fall I work mainly on audits. The end of the
year is spent on year-end tax
planning issues for certain individual and business clients. On top of that,
I have ongoing accounting, consultation, and business development work all throughout
the year.

What is your secret to success?

I have found I am most successful when I demonstrate confidence with my clients and prospects. People
come to CPAs for their knowledge in
a variety of areas and expect to deal with professionals.  Business owners, as well as individual tax clients are looking for answers and guidance.
If I don’t know the answer to a particular question, I am honest
about that with my clients, but I
then try to find the answer as soon
as possible.

Technology Tip of the Week

Provided by the MSCPA Information Technology Committee

In Excel, Use the Scenario toolbar to quickly analyze Excel data

While Excel's Scenario toolbar can be a powerful analysis tool, clicking through all the menus needed to set up a scenario is often clumsy and time consuming. Excel provides a tool that allows you to create a scenario in two steps. First, you will need to place the tool on your toolbar.

To move vertically downward within the selected range, press Enter.
