> MSCPA Leadership Changes With New Fiscal Year

This month begins the new fiscal year for MSCPA.  With the fiscal year change, MSCPA also welcomes a new slate of officers, board members, and chapter leaders.  Congratulations to Bob Torretta, a sole practitioner in St. Charles, who will lead the society as chair during this new fiscal year.  A very special thanks to Chuck Pierce of Farmer Holding Companies in Jefferson City, who has done an outstanding and devoted job of leading and enhancing the profession, as well as the society, over this past year.

> Make a Difference To Future CPAs

MSCPA is proud to announce a new pilot program in St. Louis with Junior Achievement. This new partnership with Junior Achievement offers CPAs a chance to present a special accounting curriculum for high school students.

To prepare you for presenting the curriculum, CPA volunteers are asked to attend a one-time, two-hour training session, which will be held in the MSCPA Learning Center on Thursday, August 23, 2007.  There will be a session in the morning from 8:00-10:00 a.m. and an afternoon session from 2:00-4:00 p.m.

After assessing the success of this partnership in St. Louis, MSCPA will begin expanding through the rest of the state.

> LEAP Job Shadowing—Sign Up To Host High School Students!

Last year, hundreds of high school students learned about the CPA profession through half-day job shadowing at Missouri firms and companies.  This year, MSCPA is now campaigning for you to volunteer your firm or company as a job shadow host and will contact the high school business and math teachers concerning the job shadowing opportunities in mid-September.  Like last year, MSCPA will continue firms/companies to hold their job shadowing programs in early February with the national Groundhog Day Job Shadowing program; however, the program will run the entire school year.  If you find that the February date is not convenient for your office, please consider hosting one or more students at another time during the school year.

The LEAP Job Shadowing program was very successful last year and the students and teachers are looking forward to participating this year.  You are welcome to contact Lou Simpson at 1-800-264-7966 or lsimpson@mocpa.org at any time to register your office as a host.

> LAST CHANCE: Nominate a 2007 CPA Woman-to-Watch

Do you know someone who has made a unique contribution to the accounting profession?  Do you work with an emerging leader who has created an extraordinary initiative in your company?  Do any of your associates mentor other professionals within your firm or community?

Nominate her today for the “2007 CPA Women-to-Watch Award!”

The Missouri Society of CPAs and The American Institute of CPAs Work/Life and Women’s Initiatives Executive Committee will present these prestigious awards during the August 27 Women’s Retreat in St. Louis, where winners will participate in a panel discussion on strategies for achieving success in the accounting profession.

> AICPA Tax Gap Survey

AccountingWeb reported about AICPA’s results of its membership survey regarding the federal tax gap. The AICPA surveyed 1,290 participants in an effort to gain a better understanding about the tax gap. Survey results from the nearly 1,300 CPAs responding provide such insight into the tax gap as that over 48 percent of respondents identified the experience of a traumatic event in taxpayers' lives as the reason that taxpayers fail to file returns.
