MSCPA Leadership Changes With New Fiscal Year

This month begins the new fiscal year for MSCPA.  With the fiscal year change, MSCPA also welcomes a new slate of officers, board members, and chapter leaders.  Congratulations to Bob Torretta, a sole practitioner in St. Charles, who will lead the society as chair during this new fiscal year.  A very special thanks to Chuck Pierce of Farmer Holding Companies in Jefferson City, who has done an outstanding and devoted job of leading and enhancing the profession, as well as the society, over this past year.

> Looking For A Way To Volunteer And Make A Difference To Future CPAs?

MSCPA is proud to announce a new pilot program in St. Louis with Junior Achievement. This new partnership with Junior Achievement offers CPAs a chance to present a special accounting curriculum for high school students.

To prepare you for presenting the curriculum, CPA volunteers are asked to attend a one-time, two-hour training session, which will be held in the MSCPA Learning Center on Thursday, August 23, 2007.  There will be a session in the morning from 8:00-10:00 a.m. and an afternoon session from 2:00-4:00 p.m.

After assessing the success of this partnership in St. Louis, MSCPA will begin expanding through the rest of the state.

> MSCPA Young Professionals Poll Results

In the last poll, MSCPA asked you what is the best way to beat the summer heat?  Your results are as follows:

Crank the AC

38%

Enjoying frozen treats

7%

Swimming/water sports

46%

WINNER!

Putting the convertible top down

7%

Is it true that you have to wait a half hour after eating to go swimming?

There is no medical evidence that supports waiting 30 minutes before getting in the pool.  Digestion begins immediately when you put food in your mouth, but once the food arrives in your stomach, it takes about four hours to process there completely.  Listen to your body.  If you feel pain, cramping, or fatigue when swimming, get out and wait before getting back in.

>  Accounting Students Hot Business Targets

Major companies trying to keep up with the exploding demand for financial workers are lavishing plump paychecks and tempting perks on college students seen as the next generation of auditors, bookkeepers and tax experts, the Washington Post said in a report Friday.

> Responding to Common Interview Questions Effectively

You've just landed an interview for your first accounting job, and, while elated, you're likewise somewhat nervous. You know it's your one shot to shine if you perform well, but you also know that providing answers that are not well thought through can quickly remove you from the list of contenders. While no one can say for certain what a prospective employer may ask, following are queries that come up frequently, and tips on how to respond.

> Those IMs Are Not As Private as You Think

It's already a workplace maxim that employees should be careful what they say in their emails from company computers. But fewer office workers know to apply caution to their use of instant-messaging services.
