MSCPA Leadership Changes With New Fiscal Year

This month begins the new fiscal year for MSCPA.  With the fiscal year change, MSCPA also welcomes a new slate of officers, board members, and chapter leaders.  Congratulations to Bob Torretta, a sole practitioner in St. Charles, who will lead the society as chair during this new fiscal year.  A very special thanks to Chuck Pierce of Farmer Holding Companies in Jefferson City, who has done an outstanding and devoted job of leading and enhancing the profession, as well as the society, over this past year.

> Looking For A Way To Volunteer And Make A Difference To Future CPAs?

MSCPA is proud to announce a new pilot program in St. Louis with Junior Achievement. This new partnership with Junior Achievement offers CPAs a chance to present a special accounting curriculum for high school students.

To prepare you for presenting the curriculum, CPA volunteers are asked to attend a one-time, two-hour training session, which will be held in the MSCPA Learning Center on Thursday, August 23, 2007.  There will be a session in the morning from 8:00-10:00 a.m. and an afternoon session from 2:00-4:00 p.m.

After assessing the success of this partnership in St. Louis, MSCPA will begin expanding through the rest of the state.

>  Information-Technology Integration Plans Can Make Or Break Mergers And Acquisitions

CFO Magazine reports that the importance of IT integration following a merger or acquisition isn't lost on other finance chiefs. "More and more CFOs are at least aware of the importance of IT in a merger," says Bruno Berthon, a Paris-based partner at Accenture. "But the major handicap is still the starting point — if you have processes that are well defined, you'll be entering into integration with a sound logic. But processes aren't well defined at most companies so a merger is just adding complexity to an already complex element of corporate life."

>  CFOs Pare Back Expectations for Capital Spending, Hiring and Prices

American companies are forecasting single digit percentage increases in capital spending, hiring, and the prices of their products over the next 12 months, according to a recent survey of CFOs conducted by FEI and Baruch College's Zicklin School of Business.  However, these expected increases are trending downward from earlier forecasts.

>  Is Fraud On The Rise Again?

Although the Sarbanes-Oxley Act took effect five years ago, three out of four respondents to a recent survey believe institutional fraud is more prevalent today than it was in 2002. In addition, an eye-opening 56 percent of respondents said they have personally observed financial misconduct in the past year.
