> Looking For A Way To Volunteer And Make A Difference To Future CPAs?

MSCPA is proud to announce a new pilot program in St. Louis with Junior Achievement. This new partnership with Junior Achievement offers CPAs a chance to present a special accounting curriculum for high school students.

To prepare you for presenting the curriculum, CPA volunteers are asked to attend a one-time, two-hour training session, which will be held in the MSCPA Learning Center on Thursday, August 23, 2007.  There will be a session in the morning from 8:00-10:00 a.m. and an afternoon session from 2:00-4:00 p.m.

After assessing the success of this partnership in St. Louis, MSCPA will begin expanding through the rest of the state.

> MSCPA Young Professionals Poll Results

In the last poll, MSCPA asked you what your favorite part of summer is?  Your results are as follows:

Baseball & BBQ

26%

Quality time at the pool

10%

Vacation time

13%

Spending time outside

50%

WINNER!

Spending time outside is great for your mental and physical health!  Protect yourself against the sun by following these tips:

  • Limit sun exposure during the hours when the sun's rays are the strongest, 10am to 4pm. To the extent possible, people should limit their exposure to the sun during these hours and practice all of the sun protective behaviors. Your shadow is an indicator of the sun's intensity. If your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun is at its highest intensity. The American Academy of Dermatology has established the Shadow Rule: No Shadow-SEEK SHADE.
  • Refer to the daily UV index when planning outdoor events. The UV Index is a daily forecast of the intensity of the sun's UV rays. The Index indicates the risk of overexposure to skin-damaging UV radiation and can be used to help plan outdoor activities to minimize overexposure.
  • Seek shade whenever possible.  Although trees do not offer complete sun protection, they provide about 60 percent blockage from the sun's rays.
  • Use broad-spectrum sunscreens whose active ingredients block UVA and UVB rays. The Sun Protective Factor (SPF) should be a minimum of 15. Sunscreens should be used every day, including cloudy days. They should be applied liberally and evenly before going out into the sun and should be applied frequently, especially after swimming.
  • Avoid tanning salons. Artificial UV radiation is just as bad for your skin as sunlight. Most tanning devices use UVA rays which have been shown to go deeper into the skin and contribute to premature wrinkling and skin cancer (AAD, 1994).

>  Financial Planning Industry Targets Younger Demographic

Financial planners are beginning to pay closer attention to people in their 20s and 30s, a group that has long received the brushoff from the financial-services industry because of its lack of wealth.

> Law And Accounting Firms Look To Attract Next Generation

The legal and accounting professions, dealing with an escalating talent crunch, are sharpening their focus on Generation Y, or "the millennials," born since roughly 1980. About 76 million strong, their swelling percentage of the workforce as the overall labor market shrinks is fostering changes in recruiting and retention strategy, as reported by the Atlanta Business Journal.

> New Survey Points to Productivity Gains When Friends Work Together

Gathering with the gang after work can be fun -- and a new survey suggests it may also benefit on-the-job performance.   Fifty-seven percent of executives polled said that office productivity improves when coworkers are friends outside of the office.  Nearly two-thirds (63 percent) of employees surveyed agreed.  But managers and employees aren't as aligned when it comes to just how beneficial it is to have buddies on the job: Twenty-two percent of employees said befriending coworkers has a "very positive" impact on productivity while only 2 percent of managers felt as strongly.
