"I've heard bits and pieces about a new law/ruling going into effect regarding the storage of emails.  Most firms have company policies on storage of emails and require certain add-ons to the end of emails; however, could you please clarify what the new ruling is?"

Data management and e-mail storage are very hot topics in today's business world.  E-mail messages have more than tripled over the past five years, according to IDC, a market intelligence and advisory firm.  With this development, as well as compliance-driven regulations like Sarbanes-Oxley, e-mail is now considered a business document.

There have been federal regulations passed that stipulate that anyone that may be involved with federal litigation retain electronic records.

As a result of these new compliance rules, long-term data retention has become a business requirement in many industries, including the accounting world, according to senior analyst Henry Baltazar in an article for Eweek.  Failure to manage e-mail can carry a costly penalty.

If you are unsure of your organization's policy on e-mail storage, ask!  It’s a great question!

In many ways, this has been a great boon to the economy as it led to a great increase in consumer spending on Saturdays as a restaurant visit, motorcar journeys, or a trip to the movies became standard Saturday fare. Many jurisdictions continued to enforce strict blue laws on Sunday which meant that most recreations, such as stores and theatres, were forced to close on that day. These regulations began to weaken in the years after the Second World War and Sunday also became a day of recreation for many.

In recent years the weekend has begun to fade in importance. While most people work a five day work week, when the hardware costs outweigh human costs, the competitiveness of the modern economy means that leaving a factory idle or an office unmanned for two days is of too great expense. Thus many workers regularly work on weekends. Since this is seen as a greater burden most employers pay extra for weekend work, either by agreement or by legislation, or else give time off midweek.

> Making Accounting Cool

According to CFO Magazine, the pressure for new recruits has become so intense that bigger pay packages simply aren't enough to attract them anymore. Firms are finding they have to offer signing bonuses, longer holidays, gym memberships, and other perks. And smaller outfits, especially, are having trouble sourcing enough graduates at home, leading them to broaden their search to less-developed nations.

> Have You Considered a Compliance and Ethics Career?

The compliance and ethics field encompasses how people act in large organizations, and how to keep those organizations out of trouble. At the root, we must recognize that organizations act in ways different from individuals, and that individuals in organizations do things that they would not do if acting alone.

> Executives Link Business Degree To Future Career Success

If hindsight is 20/20, new students may want to heed the advice of their predecessors.  Thirty-nine percent of executives said if they were in college today, they would choose a degree in business administration to best prepare for future success.  The other top responses were liberal arts (21 percent), accounting (14 percent) and computer science (11 percent).  This same question was asked in surveys in 1990 and 1996.  Although liberal arts was the most popular response in 1990, business administration has claimed the top spot since 1996.  The number of respondents selecting accounting as the most desirable degree has consistently increased over the years.
