Nearly 40 small firm practitioners from across the state met during the first two MSCPA Small Firm Networking Roundtables, which took place in St. Louis and Columbia. Various ideas and issues ranging from staffing concerns to balancing work and life during tax season were shared and openly discussed among the participants.

> MSCPA Financial Literacy League

MSCPA has launched a financial literacy initiative to improve the financial health of Missourians. The MSCPA Financial Literacy League is part of a national effort of the CPA profession to reach out to the community and educate the public on matters of financial practices that apply to various stages of life.

Information security management is expected to continue to have a powerful influence over business in 2007, according to the 18th Annual Top Technology Initiatives Survey conducted by the AICPA.

> Study: New CPA Recruits Seek Growth Over Pay

CPA firm partners believe compensation is the driving force behind a new recruit's decision to join and stay with the organization. But young professionals say that's not the case, that growth opportunities are the principal factor.

> A Good Boss Isn't Hard To Find, Survey Suggests

More than half (52 percent) of employees polled said they are satisfied with the performance of their bosses, while 28 percent are unhappy with their supervisors.  Similarly, 60 percent of workers said they can trust their managers, compared to 21 percent who believe their supervisors aren’t trustworthy.  Less than one-quarter (24 percent) of workers feel they could do a better job than their bosses if put in charge.

> Missouri Unemployment Claims Follow Seasonal Pattern

The Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations announced that the number of initial unemployment benefit claims filed in December 2006 declined compared to the same period last year.

In Excel, Hiding and Protecting Columns

You may have a worksheet that you need to distribute to different people so they can add and change some information. You will probably want to hide some of the columns in the worksheet, however, so that they cannot be viewed by users. You can protect the worksheet and hide data in cells, but will notice that info is still visible in the formula bar.
