Outstanding Leadership in Advancing Diversity Award
This award recognizes CPAs who have made a significant contribution to promoting diversity within the CPA profession. Nominees for the award are evaluated based on their unique and creative efforts, the channels they utilize, and their leadership by example to advance diversity in the profession.
Dedication, creativity, and determination have made Steven Harris an extremely successful leader in advancing diversity in the community and the profession.
Harris’s active contributions to the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) earned him the roles of vice president and, currently, president of the organization’s St. Louis Chapter. During his term, he has increased the amount of corporate sponsors and funding, involvement of active members, and collaboration with area minority organizations. In addition, he has coordinated the distribution of more than $35,000 in scholarships and initiated financial literacy programs.
“Steven is one of the most talented, thoughtful, hardworking, effective, and intelligent accounting professionals I know,” says Arica Morris, president of the Detroit chapter of NABA. “In a word, he has surpassed all expectations.”
Another organization with which Harris is active is InSight, a group that helps students attending historically black colleges connect with successful businesses, including Fortune 500 companies, to enhance their career development. Harris is also involved heavily with the University of Missouri-St. Louis’s Alumni Association and its African American Alumni chapter. He has been assisting with the development of the St. Louis Language Immersion School in his role as treasurer, and he serves on the steering committee of the Regional Business Council’s Young Professional Network.
Harris is a founder and co-chair of RubinBrown’s Inclusion Committee, which develops programs to enhance the recruitment, advancement, and retention of minority team members. The committee’s Aspiring Leaders initiative brings minority candidates to the office for leadership development, team building, and networking opportunities.
“Steven’s tireless service and dedication to advancing minorities in the profession and community is outstanding,” says Steve Hays, partner at RubinBrown LLP. “We can only look forward to his continued leadership and success in the profession.”
