Additional Guidance On IRS Tax Deadline Extension
The IRS hotline (1-866-562-5227) has advised what the process should be for taxpayers seeking disaster relief who reside outside of the affected counties. According to IRS personnel, the most efficient way is to send a fax including names, addresses and identification numbers of clients to them before May 19. The fax does not need to be sent before the traditional 4/15 due date. It should, however, be sent as soon as possible. The IRS fax number is 904-665-0923 (which should be verified at the time of transmission). The fax should also have a cover letter (with your return fax number) referencing the March 17th flood or FEMA #1749 and should be sent to the attention of Special Services. They will respond with a fax acknowledging their receipt of our client list within a few days.
The wording on the returns should state, "MISSOURI STORMS - FLOODS 3-19-08 FEMA #1749." It has been suggested that the wording be produced in red.
