Cover Letter & Resume Tips

You've found a job opportunity that seems to suit you!  It's time to polish your resume and write that cover letter.  But what makes the right impression?

The purpose of these documents is to promote your skills, abilities, and experiences that have qualified you for the position.  If you would like to have an experienced CPA review your resume, contact Liz Peuster.

Cover Letter

  • Research who will be viewing your application and address the letter to that individual.  If the name is not mentioned in the ad, call the company.
  • Letters should be no longer than one page.
  • Make sure your sentences are succinct and powerful.
  • Proofread for flow, clarity, spelling and grammar.  Have a friend or mentor review it as well.
  • Be as specific as possible.
  • Say "thank you."

Resume

  • Enhance your resume with information about your education, experience, and extracurricular activities.
  • Be sure to list your contributions under experience, not your job responsibilities.
  • If you had a leadership position, be sure to list that.
  • Resumes should be no longer than two pages.
  • Proofread for flow, clarity, spelling and grammar.  Have a friend or mentor review it as well.
  • Use high-quality, neutral-colored paper.
  • Use strong action works as opposed to passive language.

Have your resume and cover letter reviewed by an experienced CPA!  Contact Liz Peuster to find your mentor!
