National Groundhog Job Shadow Day

Q: What is National Groundhog Job Shadow Day?
A:
National Groundhog Job Shadow Day is a nationwide initiative dedicated to giving students a unique opportunity to "shadow" a workplace mentor as he or she goes through a normal day on the job, getting an up-close look at how the skills learned in school. On February 2, 2007, the Missouri Society of CPAs will mobilize member firms and businesses to open their doors to students. Nationwide, more than one million students and 100,000 businesses participate.

Q: Why is the MSCPA involved with National Groundhog Job Shadow Day?
A:
National Groundhog Job Shadow Day is the perfect opportunity to introduce young people to the vast opportunities that exist in our profession. Studies have shown that students become more academically motivated after experiencing job shadowing at a CPA firm or business because they are better able to grasp the connection between school and careers. Job shadowing is also a great opportunity to showcase the accounting profession and all that it has to offer through hands-on learning.

Q: Does job shadowing make a difference?
A:
A recent survey released by Junior Achievement indicates that American middle and high school students have unrealistic views of their future careers. In fact, according to the poll, one-third of students learned about career choices from job shadowing.

Q: What are the benefits of Job shadowing?
A:
Job shadowing is a win-win situation for everyone involved!
For students, job shadowing:
•      Provides an answer to the question "why do I have to learn this?"
•      Shows the importance of academics in reaching career goals
•      Helps motivate students
For employers, job shadowing:
•      Shows students the opportunities available in the accounting profession
